What if someone told you that there is a lie to which practically everyone on the planet believes, but to which they are largely oblivious. The truth can be told to others, but while it might be understood on an academic level it takes a rather sudden fundamental shift in perspective to actually "see" it. Once seen, it cannot be unseen; The lie becomes obvious and apparent everywhere one looks.
It's not a malicious lie, though it is often used to justify the most heinous of actions. It's not a terrible lie, and living under its delusion won't necessarily cause you any harm. In fact, you may learn the truth and wish you'd never taken this path. But it is a lie which colors every decision you make. Once fully liberated from this lie, and this may require significant self-introspection to really grok, so many mysteries of the mind and life become obvious and simple to understand.
Once seen - enlightenment or liberation, as some have referred to it - everything changes, and absolutely nothing changes. You alone are responsible for being honest enough with yourself to see, and for what you do with that new understanding of, well, everything.
